Colon Polyps — Patient Information

Colon polyps are growths on the inner lining of the colon or rectum. Most are benign, but some types — especially adenomatous polyps — can develop into colorectal cancer over time. Detection and removal during colonoscopy is the basis of colorectal cancer prevention.

Types of polyps

Adenomatous polyps (tubular, tubulovillous, villous) — potentially precancerous
Serrated polyps — variable cancer risk
Hyperplastic polyps — usually low risk
Inflammatory or hamartomatous polyps in specific conditions

Symptoms

Most polyps cause no symptoms and are detected during screening colonoscopy. Larger polyps may cause bleeding, change in bowel habits or, rarely, obstruction.

Diagnosis and removal

Colonoscopy is the main method for both diagnosis and removal (polypectomy). Removed polyps are sent for pathology. Follow-up colonoscopy intervals are based on number, size and histology of polyps.
