Pilonidal Sinus (Ingrown Hair Disease)
Pilonidal sinus is a chronic condition affecting the natal cleft, where small tracts form around trapped hair, leading to discharge, abscess and recurrent swelling. Treatment is individualised based on disease extent.
Symptoms
- Discharge with an unpleasant odour from the natal cleft
- Recurrent swelling, redness and pain
- Acute abscess episodes requiring drainage
- Small openings (pits) on the midline
Treatment approach
Acute abscesses require drainage. Definitive management ranges from minimally invasive techniques and laser-assisted approaches to classical excisional surgery. Long-term recurrence prevention depends on technique selection and post-procedure hygiene.
