Colonoscopy allows visualisation of the colon and rectum and is used for evaluating symptoms (such as bleeding or change in bowel habits) and for screening. The need and timing are determined individually based on history and risk factors.

Rectal bleeding or blood in stool of unclear cause
Persistent change in bowel habits or unexplained iron-deficiency anaemia
Screening based on age and family history
Follow-up of previously detected polyps

Preparation
