Anorectal Symptoms: What They May Indicate
Anorectal symptoms are common and often overlap between diagnoses. This section explains what each complaint may point to and which findings require prompt medical assessment.
Frequently reported symptoms
- Rectal bleeding or blood after using the toilet
- Anal pain, including sharp pain during defecation
- Swelling or a lump at the anal margin
- Discharge, moisture or odour
- Gas or stool leakage
- Discharge at the tailbone area
Why symptoms overlap
Hemorrhoids, fissure, fistula and inflammatory or neoplastic conditions can each cause bleeding or pain. Distinguishing them requires examination and, in some cases, endoscopy.
