Anal Swelling and Lumps

A swelling felt or seen at the anal opening is a common reason for consultation. Whether it is painful, whether it appeared suddenly and whether it can be pushed back are the main distinguishing features.

    Possible causes

    • Prolapsing internal hemorrhoid
    • Thrombosed external hemorrhoid
    • Perianal skin tag after a healed fissure or hemorrhoid
    • Perianal abscess
    • Anal warts (HPV-related lesions)
    • Rectal prolapse in older adults

    Evaluation

Inspection and digital examination, supported by anoscopy where appropriate, generally identify the cause. Lesions that persist, bleed or change in appearance may require biopsy.
