Anal Fissure (Tear in the Anal Lining)

An anal fissure is a small tear in the lining of the anal canal, typically causing sharp pain during defecation and small amounts of bright red bleeding. Most acute fissures heal with conservative care; chronic fissures may need additional interventions.

    Typical symptoms

    • Sharp, tearing pain during and shortly after defecation
    • Small amounts of bright red blood on tissue or stool
    • Spasm of the anal sphincter
    • Itching or discomfort between bowel movements

    Acute vs chronic fissure

An acute fissure is recent and superficial. A chronic fissure has been present for several weeks and may show a small skin tag or internal changes. The distinction influences treatment.

    Treatment options

Conservative care includes high-fibre diet, adequate fluids, warm sitz baths and topical agents to relax the sphincter. Chronic or unresponsive fissures may need additional medical or surgical options selected case by case.
