Proctology and Anorectal Diseases

Proctology covers diseases of the anal canal, rectum and perianal region. Many of these conditions are common, treatable and — despite being uncomfortable to talk about — benefit greatly from timely evaluation.

    Conditions covered in this section

    • Hemorrhoidal disease
    • Anal fissure
    • Anal fistula and perianal abscess
    • Pilonidal sinus (sacrococcygeal disease)
    • Anal itching, soiling and incontinence
    • Rectocele and rectal prolapse
    • Colon polyps and colonoscopy indications

    Why examination matters

Different anorectal conditions can produce very similar complaints. Bleeding, pain or swelling should never be attributed to hemorrhoids without an examination, because fissure, fistula, inflammatory disease and malignancy may present the same way.

    How an assessment usually proceeds

    • Detailed history of symptoms, bowel habit and prior treatments
    • Inspection and digital examination of the perianal region
    • Anoscopy or rectoscopy where appropriate
    • Colonoscopy or imaging when indicated by findings or risk factors
