Anal Warts (HPV / Condyloma Acuminatum)
Anal warts (condyloma acuminatum) are soft growths in the perianal region and anal canal caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). They are usually painless but can cause itching, bleeding or a sensation of swelling. Examination is required to confirm the diagnosis and to plan treatment.
Symptoms
- Small, soft, skin-coloured or grey growths around the anus
- Itching, irritation or mild bleeding
- Feeling of a lump at the anal opening
- Sometimes no symptoms at all (lesions noticed incidentally)
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made by clinical inspection of the perianal region and, when needed, anoscopy to evaluate the anal canal. In selected cases biopsy or further testing may be advised.
Treatment options
Treatment is individualised by lesion size, number and location. Options include topical medical therapies, cryotherapy, electrocautery, surgical excision and laser-assisted approaches. Follow-up is important because recurrence is possible.
