A proctology pathway follows defined steps: assessment, diagnosis, shared treatment decision, intervention where needed, and follow-up.
Steps of the pathway
- Consultation and detailed history
- Physical examination, anoscopy or rectoscopy when appropriate
- Additional tests such as colonoscopy, ultrasound or MRI if indicated
- Discussion of options, benefits, risks and alternatives
- Intervention if indicated, followed by structured aftercare
Shared decision making
The purpose of explaining alternatives is to allow an informed choice. Consent is obtained after the expected course and possible complications have been discussed.
