Seton Placement in Anal Fistula Treatment
A seton is a soft thread passed through a fistula tract. It is used when protecting sphincter function is a priority, either to allow drainage or as part of a staged treatment plan.
When it is considered
- Complex or high transsphincteric fistula tracts
- Recurrent abscess formation
- Fistula associated with inflammatory bowel disease
- Situations where continence risk must be minimised
What to expect afterwards
Mild discomfort and ongoing drainage are expected while the seton is in place. Follow-up visits assess inflammation, tract maturation and the timing of the next treatment step.
