Noticing blood in stool is concerning. Most causes are benign, but every episode should be evaluated to exclude serious conditions.
What to observe
- Colour: bright red vs dark or tarry
- Amount: streaks vs heavy bleeding
- Associated symptoms: pain, weight loss, bowel-habit change
When to seek urgent care
- Heavy or persistent bleeding
- Dizziness, weakness or signs of low blood pressure
- Bleeding with severe abdominal pain
How evaluation is done
Clinical examination is the first step. Anoscopy, proctoscopy or colonoscopy may be needed depending on suspected source.
