    Blood in Stool: What Should You Do?

    Noticing blood in stool is concerning. Most causes are benign, but every episode should be evaluated to exclude serious conditions.

    What to observe

    • Colour: bright red vs dark or tarry
    • Amount: streaks vs heavy bleeding
    • Associated symptoms: pain, weight loss, bowel-habit change

    When to seek urgent care

    • Heavy or persistent bleeding
    • Dizziness, weakness or signs of low blood pressure
    • Bleeding with severe abdominal pain

    How evaluation is done

    Clinical examination is the first step. Anoscopy, proctoscopy or colonoscopy may be needed depending on suspected source.
