Colon Polyps: Are They Dangerous?

Most colon polyps are benign, but some types can progress to colorectal cancer over years. Detection and removal during colonoscopy reduce this risk.
Common types
- Hyperplastic polyps — usually low risk
- Adenomatous polyps — potential to progress
- Sessile serrated lesions — variable risk, careful follow-up
Why removal matters
Polyp removal during colonoscopy is one of the most effective measures against colorectal cancer. Pathology of the removed tissue guides the follow-up interval.
Follow-up
After removal, surveillance colonoscopy is planned based on number, size, histology of polyps and personal/family history.
