Colorectal Cancer Screening in 2026: Blood Tests, Stool Tests and Colonoscopy

    Updated 2026-06-146 min read

Colorectal cancer often develops from polyps. Blood tests, stool tests and colonoscopy serve different purposes; the right option depends on personal risk and clinical context.

    Why colonoscopy matters

Colonoscopy allows direct visualisation of the colon, biopsy of suspicious lesions and removal of polyps in suitable conditions — so it is both diagnostic and, at times, therapeutic.

    What stool tests offer

Faecal occult blood tests and newer stool-based markers screen for blood or tumour-related signals. A positive result usually requires a colonoscopy for diagnostic clarification.

    Do blood tests replace colonoscopy?

Blood-based screening can help reach people who would otherwise skip screening, but its sensitivity for early cancers and precancerous polyps is not equivalent to colonoscopy. A normal blood test does not eliminate the need for further evaluation when risk factors exist.

    Who should be evaluated earlier

    • Family history of colon or rectal cancer
    • Previous polyps or inflammatory bowel disease
    • Unexplained anaemia or rectal bleeding
    • New change in bowel habits or unintentional weight loss
